News Flash: Boys, Girls, Both Human

This news story about a study revels in discovering that science has found that boys and girls aren’t really all that different in mental acuity and that low income is bad for people.

I don’t know what the real study reveals or does not reveal, but this article, treating the discovery that “Mental performance differs little by gender” as news in 2007 is a little disappointing.

Women: Almost as human as men

Make no mistake, yesterday’s supreme court decision should come as no surprise. The christian right is nothing if not organized and disciplined. The great thing about trying to organize a group of authoritarians is they love being told what to do and they always do what they are told. Once the leadership had set their sights on the courts it was a matter of time before they succeed in what they always called “legislating from the bench”.

Here is a quick roundup of good posts on this:

Defending Choice: why it is good politics This is important because a lot of (male) democrats like to talk as if the abortion issue is one we can throw under the bus to improve electoral chances.

A great article in Salon about “a decision that might as well have come with a gift card made out to President Bush’s base“.

Where the stand via NY Times.

Take My Uterus, Please from pandagon.

And finally, I strongly recommend, in addition to the appaling decision linked by Vijay, Justice Ginsberg’s great dissent (pdf).

Not to beat a dead horse

God I Hate This Story

Jill has a nice post about it.

I hate public rape cases. They bring out the absolute worst in people. The DA in the Duke case looks to have really done a terrible job on all levels. But that doesn’t mean there are women out there constantly looking to falsely accuse people of rape. Or that women who are strippers, prostitutes or just not perfect virgins can’t be raped.

Yeah, what she said

Amanda in top form:

Well, I’m calling bullshit. Let’s be perfectly clear. People aren’t mad at Imus for the sounds “nappy-headed ho”. We are mad because Don Imus is a racist fuckwit, everyone knows he’s a racist fuckwit, and when politicians go on his show and people go on TV defending him, they are saying, loud and clear, that racist fuckwittery wins and you people who are opposed to racist fuckwittery need to suck a lemon. We are mad because we want simple, basic justice and Imus and his buddies are resisting that. We want women to be athletes and we want black people to have the same access to education as white people and Imus and his buddies are resisting us. The exact language he used to convey the idea that he opposes female athletes and black scholars is interesting but not the ultimate point. The battle is over whether or not we as a society are going to grant full equality to women and black people or not.
