Up and Away

People in San Francisco have a tendency to fight any change (like everyone I suppose). But in a city that has no more land and is growing at the pace this one is the only choices are building up or accepting that everyone will be priced out of the rental and housing market.

Bush to Lie, Do Nothing

As the AP puts it “President Bush will tell the nation this week he plans to reduce the American troop presence in Iraq by as many as 30,000 by next summer, but will condition those and further cuts on continued progress…”

Excuse me if I don’t believe that. The AP got a “scoop” from another anonymous admin PR flack that we might reduce troop numbers if “progress” continues. What progress? The progress they invented? The progress that is just enough to keep us in Iraq, but not enough for us to leave? Again, why are we still there? The Iraqis wants us to leave. 2/3 of americans want us to leave. And we aren’t even making any progress. At what point will this White House get tired of lying to us? When will the media stop reprinting this crap?

Moral Panic

Is the current “obesity” obsession really about health? If you look at the data, it isn’t.

Yesterday at lunch a coworker of mine told me that he was at a part with a lot of rich people. I asked how he could tell they were rich and he replies “they were all so fit”. In our culture weight has become a class marker.

It can be very difficult for working people to find time to exercise an hour every day and eat right. And it is impossible for them to afford trainers and nutritionists. And if you don’t have time to cook and you can’t spend more than $5 on a meal your choices are limited to fast food. So poorer people are more likely to be obese or overweight. The culture has picked up on this and decided that obese people are lower class people. And then in order to provide some kind of moral cover we have all decided that there is an “obesity epidemic” and that all these people are so unhealthy because of their moral failings, when in reality they are unhealthy because they are poor.
