Why Elections Matter: Episode #234
Supremes get rid of affirmative action. This is what judicial activism looks like.

Oh No He didn’t…
White House refuses to turn over subpoenaed documents. Shit hits fan.
Shameless, Pandering Conservatives
There are thoughtful people on the right. In fact, some conservatives you thought you would hate come off as reasonable when challenged by a liberal they respect (for example, Ponnuru’s debate w/ Yglesias). Even the most vile of them all, David Horowitz, comes off okay in this debate with Michael Berube. Here’s the thing, these people aren’t Senator Sessions or David Addington. They understand nuance. They can see merit in some of the arguments made on the other side. They even see some problems with their own position. But outside the context of a formal debate, they refuse to engage with any of these issues seriously and instead resort to shameful demagoguery. The latest example is Jonah Goldberg. These people are frauds and should not be taken seriously. They’re smart enough to know that issues are more complex than they make them out to be. But they’re too self-interested to really care.
New Orleans as Microcosm of America’s Crisis of Governance
Almost everything wrong with the Bush Administration’s approach to domestic policy can be seen in their responses to Hurrican Katrina in New Orleans: corruption, cronyism, racism, neoliberal privatization, anti-immigration… All detailed in this article by Bill Quigley, “Lessons from Katrina: How to Destroy an African American City in 33 Steps”.

Pointless Arguements
There are still people that support the war. Based on their postings on the internet, this is how they think:
Normal Human: “This war was a terrible mistake”
Crazy Wingnut: “We were attacked on 9/11!! 3,000 people died! Don’t you get it? Don’t you people understand? Its a mad house, A MAD HOUSE!”
Normal Human: ???
Parodies of Anti-Choice Billboards?
Are you sick of seeing those creepy babies on “prolife across america” billboards? (e.g., “before I was even born I could smile”). Wouldn’t it make you smile to see some parodies of them? I’ve seen some random vandalizing of them (e.g., with random splashes of red paint), but nothing substantial or clever. If anybody has any pictures, please post a link to them. Also, if you have any ideas for good parodies, maybe we can inspire some brave guerrilla artists. A couple I’ve thought of: 1) “before I was even born I could smile… But now my Mom never smiles, because the state controls her body.” 2) “Embryos… are just tiny babies!” (cover the baby’s face with an old man’s face, and write: “The Elderly… are just big babies!”).
Bong Hits for Bad Government
I love this topic. But these decisions suck. I will let Vijay explain why.
Interesting, I was on the home page of Yahoo News and nothing about the supreme court was there. But there was the important story of the Cameron Diaz’s purse and some breaking news about a judge’s pants. Thanks, media!
Cheney is the Dictator
Read this. Very scary. Cheney thinks he is above the law (and the congress has let him get away with it)
