Hillary and Unions?
Does anybody know what the democratic candidates’ stances on unions are? According to this article, “Clinton Moved Wal-Mart Board, but Only So Far,” Hillary seems to be ostensibly in favor of unions. When she sat on the Wal-Mart board of directors from 1986-1992, she sat quietly on the sidelines while Wal-Mart remained strongly anti-union, but the article implies that she knew that unions were a lost cause and that to argue for them would have weakened her ability to argue for other issues, particularly gender equality in management and environmental issues. Now,
a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton said, “Wal-Mart workers should be able to unionize and bargain collectively.”
Yet, I wonder if she is just taking that position as PR to get the union vote. How tough will she fight for unions against Wal-Mart corporate? Or will she just broker compromises between them? Do the candidates have any significant differences in their explicit stances on unions?
